Professional Scrum Master I practice exams

Scrum.org's foundational Scrum Master assessment — a Scrum Guide comprehension exam, not a multiple-choice trivia test, and unlike every other exam on this roadmap it never expires.

Try a real PSM I question

The Scrum Guide says Scrum is founded on empiricism and lean thinking. What does it say lean thinking contributes?

About the PSM I exam

Professional Scrum Master I (PSM I) validates a working understanding of the Scrum framework as defined in the official Scrum Guide: the theory and values Scrum is built on, the Scrum Team's three accountabilities, the five events, and the three artifacts with their commitments. It's administered directly by Scrum.org as an open, timed online assessment — no in-person or remote proctor required at this level.

Questions aren't 'define this term' — they're mostly scenario and situational-judgment items: a Scrum Team does X, is that consistent with the Scrum Guide? That makes rote memorization less useful than genuinely understanding why the framework is built the way it is, and it's why PSM I has a reputation for being harder to pass on a first attempt than its multiple-choice format suggests.

The real exam

Public information published by Scrum.org. A CertRidge practice exam matches this format — it is not a copy of the exam's contents.

Format
80 multiple-choice, multiple-answer, and true/false questions in a strict 60-minute timebox. Taken online through Scrum.org's own assessment platform — no test centre and no proctor required for this level.
Cost
200 USD per attempt, with no regional pricing variation published by Scrum.org.
Scoring
Scored as a percentage of questions answered correctly; 85% is the passing mark. Multiple-answer questions require every correct option selected — no partial credit.
Validity
Does not expire. Unlike every other certification on this roadmap, Scrum.org certifications have no renewal, continuing-education, or recertification requirement once earned.

Practice by exam domain

CertRidge practice exams draw questions in these same proportions, from a bank of 598 PSM I questions. Open a domain for what it covers and free questions with answers.

Who it's for

  • People taking on or already working as a Scrum Master and wanting the credential most recognised across the industry for that role
  • Product Owners, developers, and project/delivery managers who work inside Scrum Teams and want a rigorous, framework-accurate understanding of how the roles and events are supposed to function
  • Anyone evaluating whether their organization's 'Scrum' actually matches the Scrum Guide, rather than a locally drifted version of it

How to prepare

  • Read the actual Scrum Guide — it's short (well under 20 pages) and is the sole source the assessment is written against; nothing on the exam requires outside training-provider material.
  • Study by domain weight as CertRidge structures it: Scrum Events is the largest share at 30%, with Scrum Artifacts and Commitments next at 25% — well over half the exam between them.
  • Practise situational-judgment thinking, not flashcard recall: for every scenario, ask 'what does the Scrum Guide actually say happens here' rather than 'what would a good Scrum Master do in general.'
  • Watch for answer options that sound reasonable but aren't actually in the Scrum Guide (industry folklore like a fixed '10% of capacity for refinement' rule) — the real assessment tests the text itself, not common training-provider add-ons.
