CompTIA retired CompTIA Security+ (SY0-601) on July 31, 2024. If you are starting now, you will sit SY0-701 (CompTIA Security+).
What SY0-601 was
SY0-601 was version 6 of CompTIA Security+, the entry-level security certification. It launched in November 2020 and was organised into five domains: Attacks, Threats, and Vulnerabilities; Architecture and Design; Implementation; Operations and Incident Response; and Governance, Risk, and Compliance.
What changed in SY0-701
- The five domains were reorganised and renamed: General Security Concepts; Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Mitigations; Security Architecture; Security Operations; and Security Program Management and Oversight.
- The objective list is shorter: SY0-701 has 28 numbered objectives.
- More weight on current topics such as zero trust, automation and orchestration, cloud and hybrid environments, and IoT and OT security.
- The format stayed the same: up to 90 questions, multiple choice plus performance-based items, 90 minutes, passing score 750 on a 100 to 900 scale.
If you passed SY0-601
A Security+ certification earned on SY0-601 stays valid for three years from the day you passed, the same as one earned on SY0-701. You don't need to retake the exam to keep it; CompTIA's continuing education program renews it.
