During team chartering, an agile team agreed on ground rules, including that everyone joins the daily stand-up on time. One team member has now been late for several stand-ups in a row, and other members are getting frustrated. What should happen first?
About the PMP exam
The Project Management Professional (PMP) is issued by PMI and tests project leadership across three domains: People (leading and building the team), Process (the technical work of managing the project), and Business Environment (connecting the project to organisational strategy and compliance).
The current exam is approach-agnostic: roughly half the questions reflect predictive (plan-driven) project management and the rest are split between agile and hybrid. Almost every question is situational — 'you are the project manager, what do you do next' — and rewards the PMI mindset: servant leadership, tailoring the approach, and delivering value over merely finishing.
The real exam
Public information published by PMI. A CertRidge practice exam matches this format — it is not a copy of the exam's contents.
- Format
- 180 questions in 230 minutes, with two scheduled breaks. Question formats include multiple choice, multiple response, matching, hotspot, and limited fill-in-the-blank. Delivered at a Pearson VUE test centre or online with a proctor.
- Cost
- Approximately 405 USD for PMI members and 555 USD for non-members; PMI membership itself is around 150 USD per year.
- Scoring
- PMI does not publish a passing percentage. Results are reported as a performance rating (for example Above Target / Target / Below Target) per domain, set psychometrically for each exam form.
- Validity
- The certification is valid for 3 years, maintained by earning 60 professional development units (PDUs) in that cycle.
Practice by exam domain
CertRidge practice exams draw questions in these same proportions, from a bank of 597 PMP questions. Open a domain for what it covers and free questions with answers.
Who it's for
- Practising project managers and team leads who run projects and want the credential recruiters and RFPs ask for
- People leading delivery under a different title — programme coordinator, delivery lead, scrum master moving into broader PM work
- Professionals outside IT entirely — construction, healthcare, finance, government — where PMP is a standard expectation
How to prepare
- Learn the domain split (People 33%, Process 41%, Business Environment 26%) but expect every question to blend leadership judgement with technique.
- Default to the servant-leader move: understand the situation, talk to the people involved directly and privately, remove the impediment, and empower the team — before escalating.
- For agile/hybrid questions, know the ceremonies and artefacts and the reasons behind them: backlog refinement, definition of ready/done, MVP, sustainable pace, retrospectives producing tracked actions.
- Be fluent in the few calculations that appear — earned value (SV, CV, SPI, CPI), three-point estimates, critical path — then take full-length timed attempts to build endurance for 180 questions.
